Unemployment Insurance Update

When the 2010 Session begins tomorrow, actions to address the unemployment insurance (UI) tax increase will begin immediately.

The administration bill, which includes a plan to modify Maryland’s UI system to permanently expand eligibility and benefits in order to obtain one-time federal stimulus funds, will be introduced Wednesday. The Maryland Chamber opposes the plan as currently drafted, and has proposed offsets to the proposal to provide balance to the UI system.

A meeting with a small group from the state’s UI Joint Oversight Committee will also take place on Wednesday morning to discuss negotiations regarding the legislation. The group will include representatives from business, labor, the administration, and Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation. The Chamber will also be a part of this small group meeting, and will take a final position on the legislation after negotiations.
