Shift Breaks Bill Coming Soon

House Economic Matters Committee Chairman Dereck Davis (D-Dist. 25) is expected to introduce legislation that would mandate shift breaks for certain businesses with 50 or more employees.

Similar legislation introduced last year would have mandated that employers provide a 15-minute break after four hours of work, and a 30-minute break after six hours of work. The Maryland Chamber opposed the bill, arguing that such a broad mandate could have unintended consequences, particularly as it relates to emergency situations and flexible work arrangements.

This year’s legislation is expected to be less broad, with regulations limited to retail establishments, but still puts additional burdens on businesses.

“This is a one-sized-fits all mandate on a matter that would be better handled by the employees and employers themselves,” Maryland Chamber Vice President of Government Affairs Allyson Black said.

The Maryland Chamber will oppose the legislation. For more information, contact Allyson Black at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
