Senate Committee Considers Jobs and Taxes
Business representatives this week asked the Senate Budget & Taxation Committee for stability in Maryland’s business tax laws as a signal to employers that the state is serious about attracting new jobs. Ron Wineholt, Vice President of Government Affairs for the Maryland Chamber, noted the state’s meager job growth of the past year and asked Committee members not to impose additional costs on employers. Despite many strengths, Maryland suffers from an image of high costs for doing business, aggressive regulation, and undue intervention in the marketplace. Virginia remains a formidable competitor for jobs. The Committee heard a staff briefing on the state corporate income tax and discussed options to promote job creation.
