Montgomery Delegation Votes No on Split Rate Property Tax Bill

We heard from the Montgomery County Chamber that the county’s legislative delegation voted down a proposal that would allow Montgomery County to establish classes of real and personal property and to impose varying rates of taxation on each class (HB 838). A minority of states authorize local governments to impose differential tax rates on varying classes of property. Such laws always result in local governments imposing discriminatory and burdensome levels of taxation on business property

Representatives from a number of business organizations opposed this bill during a hearing in Rockville in December 2008. Read more here.

A delegation vote like this usually spells the end for a bill. We will have to wait to see if the bill gets withdrawn, or if they still schedule a hearing in the Ways & Means Committee.
