Minimum Wage Bill to be Heard Next Week
Legislation to raise Maryland’s minimum wage to $8.25 per hour this year, $9 next year and $9.75 in 2013 will be heard by the Senate Finance Committee next week. The legislation would also index Maryland’s minimum wage to the Consumer Price Index beginning in 2014.
The Maryland Chamber will oppose the bill, SB 716, which was introduced by Senate Majority Leader Rob Garagiola (D-Dist. 15). Given the state of the economy, we believe the General Assembly should focus on enhancing Maryland’s business climate and encouraging job growth. “Small businesses in Maryland are facing enough challenges,” Maryland Chamber President & CEO Kathy Snyder, CCE said. “During difficult economic times, we shouldn’t be imposing additional costs onto small businesses that are already struggling.”
