Juice Not Worth the Squeeze in Taxing Remote Sales

Maryland taxpayers are failing to pay nearly $200 million annually in state sales tax on remote purchases.  However, without federal legislation, there is little chance of the state recouping significant amounts of those funds. The State Comptroller’s Office issued a report last week evaluating the impact on the Maryland sales tax of purchases from out of state vendors. The few states that have attempted to tax remote vendors have collected little in sales tax revenues, while being mired in litigation.  See the Comptroller’s report here.  Contact Ron Wineholt for further information at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) .
