Health Care Commission to Alter Small Employer Subsidy
The Maryland Health Care Commission is expected to vote today on staff recommendations that would provide more generous health insurance subsidies to small employers, effective October 1st. Although annual program funding was reduced to $2 million, only about 175 small employers have enrolled since the program opened last fall. To qualify, an employer must have 2-9 full time employees, an average wage of under $50,000, and not offered health insurance during the prior 12 months. The proposed benefit changes would:
- Significantly increase subsidy amounts at all wage levels
- Qualify Executive Directors of non-profit organizations for the $60,000 cap on salaries counted in the employer’s “average wage”
- Qualify domestic partners for coverage as a spouse
