Governor’s Package Includes Unemployment Benefits for Part-Time Workers

Governor O’Malley’s legislative package includes a proposal to extend unemployment benefits to part-time workers (SB 270/HB 310).

The Maryland Chamber supports the concept of this legislation.  There is a need to adapt to a changing workplace, due to the fact that working a nine to five job is no longer the standard, and the part-time workforce has a stronger presence today than in past decades.

SB 270/HB310 establishes a separate category of worker/claimant.  An Individual who has a history of only part-time work, works in an industry that primarily only hires part-time employees, and is currently working part-time is not “unemployed” and thus not eligible for benefits.

A hearing has been set for SB 270 on February 17. For more information, contact Allyson Black at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
