Federal Health Care Bills Pose Employer Risks
Congressional action on the House and Senate health care bills accelerated this week with both bodies working to complete bills that can be brought to a floor vote by early October. Several provisions remain a concern for employers in the three bills (House, Senate HELP Committee, and Senate Finance Committee) including:
- Taxes and assessments on employers that don’t offer health insurance;
- Minimum health insurance subsidy levels for employers;
- Required coverage for part-time workers;
- Cost shifts to employers from a “public option” plan; and
- Weakening of ERISA protections for self-insured employers.
