False Claims Bill to be Heard in the House Thursday

The House Judiciary Committee will hear the false claims bill Thursday. The bill, SB 279, was passed by the Senate last week by a vote of 37-8. The legislation would allow individuals to sue health care providers on behalf of the state.

While the legislation was amended in the Senate to address some of our concerns, the Maryland Chamber continues to oppose the bill. Maryland Chamber Vice President of Government Affairs Ron Wineholt will outline the Chamber’s opposition during Thursday’s hearing. He will be joined by representatives of the Maryland State Medical Society and PhRMA.

The Chamber opposes the bill because we believe it will generate needless lawsuits against health care providers. Enforcement of state laws should remain a state responsibility.
