E-Verify Mandate Set for Summer Study

SB 844 and HB 721 would have required businesses with a state procurement contract to use the federal E-Verify system for all new hires, or be subject to specified sanctions. Although the Maryland Chamber took no position on the bills, we expressed concern regarding the accuracy of the underlying federal databases supporting E-Verify and the inability of the system to detect identity theft. 

While neither bill has moved out of committee at this point, the Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee has referred the issue to interim study.  Contact Ron Wineholt for further information at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
