Criminal Background Check Bill Withdrawn
Legislation that would have prohibited employers from using an individual’s criminal history when making personnel decisions was withdrawn by the sponsor this week.
The bill, HB 907, would have prohibited an employer from discharging, refusing to hire, or otherwise discriminating against an individual with respect to terms and conditions of employment based on information that an the individual has been convicted of a criminal offense not directly related to employment.
The Maryland Chamber opposed the bill, arguing that criminal background checks are an important tool employers can use to ensure that individuals hired are appropriate for the job under consideration.
