Clean Energy Industry Comes to Annapolis

Representatives from Maryland’s energy industry, business community, the Administration and the Maryland General Assembly attended the Maryland Clean Energy Center’s (MCEC) first Legislative Reception this morning to discuss clean energy policy and the state of the clean energy industry in Maryland.

The MCEC was created in 2008 through an act of the Maryland General Assembly to promote the growth and deployment of clean energy technologies in Maryland. Representatives from a number of Maryland Chamber member companies serve on MCEC’s advisory board.

MCEC’s legislative priorities were discussed and Delegate Sue Hecht said she is optimistic about the progress being made on some of the legislation.

“It’s exciting to see how many interesting and important bills that we have in a time when our economy is in a difficult place,” she said. “We’re working to move forward on these important policy issues so we can lay the groundwork now, so you can get to work on these issues in the future.”

Senator Rob Garagiola expressed his support for the work of the MCEC and said that clean energy is important to the future of Maryland’s economy.

“We hear the mantra of ‘jobs, jobs, jobs,’ now because of the economy. Over the last few years we’ve seen job growth in renewable energy, energy efficiency, those sectors of our economy,” Garagiola said. “Those are the kinds of jobs that you can’t outsource, and those are the jobs we’re growing here in Maryland.”
