Chamber Urges Lawmakers to Protect Taxpayer Data

The Senate Budget and Taxation Committee heard legislation this week that would authorize the Comptroller to require state agencies to electronically provide license, permit, and registration information for use a new database for enforcing state tax laws (SB 249).

While the Maryland Chamber supports efforts to give the Comptroller’s office the tools they need to enforce state tax laws, Vice President of Government Affairs Ron WIneholt urged members of the committee to strengthen the language in the bill to ensure that confidential taxpayer data is protected.

“Combining state and federal tax information with data from employers, banks, and state agency permits, licenses and registrations will create the most powerful database of personal information on Maryland residents ever assembled,” Wineholt said. “Now is the time, before the database is created, to ensure that the confidentiality of the data gathered is maintained and this tool is only used for tax administration.”
