Campaign Finance Report Would Impact Businesses

Attorney General Doug Gansler released a report this week that made 25 recommendations for reforming Maryland’s campaign finance laws. Several of the recommended law changes would be of particular interest to Maryland businesses. The report calls for disclosure reports to be filed with the State Board of Elections by all individuals or groups making “independent expenditures” in a campaign. The report also recommends that affiliated business entities and other organizations under common control or ownership be treated as one entity for purposes of applying the state’s campaign contribution limits.  In testimony before the study committee, Maryland Chamber Vice President of Government Affairs Ron Wineholt called for even handed treatment for employers and unions for purposes of campaign contributions.
