Build Relationships with Your Elected Officials
The Maryland Economic Development Association held its Winter Conference in Annapolis last week. The agenda included a session entitled the Maryland Business Leadership Report, which included Maryland Chamber President/CEO Kathy Snyder, CCE; Greater Baltimore Committee President/CEO Don Fry and Tech Council of Maryland CEO Renee Winsky.
The three leaders shared their priorities for the 2011 session, which focused on business growth and job creation. They also encouraged business people to build relationships with their lawmakers.
Sending letters and emails or coming to Annapolis to testify during key committee hearings is important. But, the panel urged business leaders to do more throughout the year to develop relationships with their elected officials.
Many lawmakers don’t have business backgrounds. They make policy decisions with the best of intentions, but don’t always understand the potential unintended consequences or hidden costs of legislative proposals that impact the state’s businesses.
Reach out to your lawmakers to schedule a one-on-one meeting with them. Let them know how decisions made in Annapolis impact your business. Schedule a time after the session for them to visit your business and talk with your employees.
