BRAC Update
The Joint Legislative Committee on Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) received a progress report this week from executive branch officials detailing state actions to facilitate impending BRAC job relocations. Asuntha Chiang-Smith, BRAC Subcabinet Executive Director, said that the state still expects to receive over 60,000 BRAC-related jobs and that the number of jobs continues to grow.
There will be $1.9 billion in BRAC construction, with another $94 million in construction resulting from the federal stimulus legislation. Andy Scott, Special Assistant to the Secretary of Transportation, stated that $94.5 million is programmed for 16 intersections at BRAC locations. However, under questioning he conceded that the money is largely for design and right of way acquisition, and the state currently lacks the funds to construct all of the projects.
