BRAC on Track – Except for Transportation Funding

“Everyone will be in place on September 15, but not everyone is prepared for everyone to be in place.” observed Senator Roy Dyson, Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) at a Committee meeting this week.

Over 21,400 federal civilian and military jobs will have relocated to Maryland as a result of the BRAC process as of September 15, with as many as 40,000 additional direct and indirect jobs estimated to arrive in future years. The State has moved aggressively to assist this job transition with job relocation information, new training and education programs, and help with obtaining State licenses.  However, desperately needed road and transit projects to accommodate these new workers have lagged due to the ongoing diversion of transportation funds to general fund expenditures.  See the material from this week’s meeting and the State’s BRAC website.
