Bill Would Require Employers to Pay Employees for Jury Duty
The House Judiciary Committee heard legislation today that would require employers with more than 10 employees to compensate employees for time spent on jury duty.
The bill, HB 1136, would mandate that employers pay employees their average daily compensation, less any government per diem, for each day they are called for jury service. Employers who failed to do so would face a fine of up to $1,000.
The Maryland Chamber opposes this bill. Any financial hardship caused by jury service is the result of the government’s action, not that of the employer. Similar legislation was defeated last year.
