Bill to Require Employers to Pay Employees for Jury Duty Defeated
Legislation to require Maryland employers to compensate employees for time spent on jury duty was voted down by the House Judiciary Committee this week.
The bill, HB 1320, would have mandated that employers pay employees their average daily compensation, less any government per diem, for each day they are called for jury service. Employers who failed to do so would face a fine of up to $1,000.
The Maryland Chamber opposed this bill. Any financial hardship caused by jury service is the result of the government’s action, not that of the employer.
