Bill Targets Employer Use of Criminal Background Checks
The House Government Operations Committee will hear legislation today that would prohibit employers from using an individual’s criminal history when making personnel decisions.
The bill, HB 907, would prohibit an employer from discharging, refusing to hire, or otherwise discriminating against an individual with respect to terms and conditions of employment based on information that an the individual has been convicted of a criminal offense not directly related to employment. The bill exempts certain sexual offenses.
The Maryland Chamber opposes the bill. “Criminal background checks are an important and legitimate tool that can assist employers in ensuring that individuals that are hired are appropriate for the job under consideration,” Maryland Chamber Vice President of Government Affairs Allyson Black said.
