July Special Session Remains Uncertain

Anything is possible, but nothing is certain when it comes to gaming expansion in Maryland. Yesterday the Governor’s Workgroup to Consider Gaming Expansion was briefed on a report jointly prepared by the Department of Legislative Services and PricewaterhouseCoopers. The report analyzed the impact of authorizing an additional slots facility at National Harbor in Prince George’s County and table games at all slots locations. The analysis projected that the state could realize over $100 million in additional revenues from such an authorization, and that all five current licensees would likewise see a net benefit. However, it remains to be seen if this report will be persuasive to members of the House of Delegates, who have been reluctant to endorse such legislation. The prospects for a July special session on gaming will become clearer at next Wednesday’s final meeting of the Workgroup when recommendations for action are debated. See the report.
