The Maryland Chamber’s Transportation Coalition and Legislative Committee will consider Governor O’Malley’s transportation bill (SB 971/HB 1302) this week.
The bill would apply the state’s 6 percent sales tax to the sale of gasoline by phasing it in at 2 percent per year for the next three years. The tax would be applied to the retail cost of gasoline, minus federal and state taxes. The legislation would include a breaking mechanism to limit the tax if the price of gas spikes, and greater protections to ensure that funds raised for the Transportation Trust Fund (TTF) aren’t used for unrelated purposes.
Chamber President & CEO Kathy Snyder thanked the Governor for his leadership on this important issue. Although the Maryland Chamber does not yet have a position on the Governor’s proposal per se, the Maryland Chamber continues to advocate for increased transportation funding and greater protections for the TTF.
