Bill to Expand FMLA Defeated

The House Economic Matters Committee voted down legislation (HB 1272) that would have expanded the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to require employers to provide leave to employees to care for siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, domestic partners, and children of domestic partners. The Maryland Chamber opposed the bill. The vote was 14-8.

In testimony prepared for the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, Elizabeth Torphy-Donzella of Shawe & Rosenthal, LLP said, “Despite this worthy objective, this mandate imposes significant costs and burdens on Maryland employers at a time when they can least afford it.”
